Car Harness Testing

Lots of dog car harnesses on the market these days.

Why do you need a dog harness for your car?

Well, let's see what happens to your dog during a slow-speed, unrestrained crash at 30mph/48kph.

Not something you ever want to happen -- for your dog, your passengers or yourself!

Here's how the main, off-the-shelf, brands do in independent crash testing.

Quite shocking!

Since there are currently no standards for dog safety harnesses, they almost all tend to fail -- even though the belts/stitching/buckles/caribeaners look sturdy and even the same as you'd find on a child car-seat.

Only one brand passes -- Sleepypod

Therefore, this is the only one we can recommend.

We recommend the Small size for our dogs. But please measure and consult the sizing charts on the Sleepypod website to be sure.

Here's the Canadian test with a 75lbs crash-test-dummy dog.

The benefit of the Sleepypod harnesses is they use your car's seatbelt and maintain a minimum distance that your dog is away from the seat-back.

Sleepypod also sells some excellent beds/carriers specifically for the car that are also independently tested.

A little more pricey, but may be worth it for those longer trips and not having to snap your dog into/out-of their seatbelt.

You can see videos of all Sleepypod's tests here
